Textual Analysis

In the lesson today we learnt how to fully analysed still image. I went of google and typed in the 'The Ring' and I found a picture of a girl climbing out a well which was a creepy picture for my textual analysis.

I analysed this image by answering the following questions;

- What colours are being used? What emotions do they convey?

- Which are the most important elements of this image? How can you tell?

- How is light being used? What atmosphere does this create?

-Who is being shown in the still?

- How are they being represented?

- What relationship is created between people in the still?

- What background is behind the character? What does this tell us about the film?

- What are the actors wearing? What expectations of their character does this suggest to us?

- Who might watch this film?

- Are these typical elements of a film of this type? (codes and conventions?)

- What type (i.e. genre) would you say this film is? How can you tell?

I answered all the questions for my textual analysis on 'The Ring'.

In this image from The Ring has dark and dim colours, this is very normal it is for convention as thriller are normally in dark colours which represents horror and scariness. the image of the girl coming out of the well e

Sharp White

Our film will be called, 'Sharp White'. As a group we have decided that our film will be along the lines as the film 'The strangers' but with one victim, not two.
The plot for our film is; A young girl returns home from college, carrying her work. She's struggling with the front door keys, when she finally opens the door she remembers that she has left something behind. She then makes her way back to the car, leaving the front door open, un-knowing that there is a visitor making its way into her home. When she then re-enters her home, she locks the door behind her, un-aware that she is not alone. The masked stranger, then makes its way to the back door and welcomes in two accomplishes. The victim can feel the presence, but doesn't see them.

You will never know who they are, or why they are there. Maybe they got bored?or maybe its revenge, we will never know the true story behind the un wanted visit.

Continuity sequence completed

Here is our continuity sequence. We used the story board and followed it to create the continuity sequence. In our continuity sequence we used shots such as; close up shot, medium shot and we also shot reverse shot. In the editing process for the continuity sequence I found it quite tricky, but soon got the hang of it once I started using it. In our group none of us have used 'i movie' before, so we weren't to confident about using it. After we had used i movie, I think we are all confident on planning and creating our next film of a thriller opening scene and using i movie again. I really enjoyed filming and  editing because it was my first time of using a camera and filming and also editing to create a film. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can't wait to start filming again with my group.

Continuity sequence, story board.

Before we started filming we had to draw up a story board up of what we were going to film for our continuity sequence. We have to draw a story board up to show what we are going to do and what happens in our continuity sequence. We also did a shot list. We used Close up shot,  Medium shot and Long shot

Here is pictures of our story board underneath:

Analysing Thriller Films.

The strangers.
The strangers is a horror thriller film. The first film i looked at was The Strangers. The film is about a couple who are staying in a vacation house, after going to a wedding. after the wedding they go back to the vocation house and they hear a knock on the door late at night and don't think to worry about it.
After the knock at the door 3 mysterious masked strangers make their way into the house. The 3 mysterious stranger they torture the couple until they are dead. The couple ask the 3 strangers 'why are they doing this and their reply was 'because you were home' this shows that there was no motive for them to kill the couple, they did it because they could, the strangers. After looking and watching the The strangers movie,
In my group and we have all decided to make something similar to 'The Strangers' for our thriller film we will have to make in the future.

Below is the trailer for The Strangers which is linked from YouTube:

The Ring

The ring is a thriller, horror, mystery, supernatural, suspense thriller film. The film is about a video tape which is said to be cursed. Every time someone watches it they are able to see the dead. There is a legend about this tape that the person who watches it will die seven days after watching it. Every time when people watch the video tape the phone rings telling them they only have one week to live. There is a young reporter called Rachel who watches the video tape with her son after she has watched it she has only one week and is fighting against time and trying to find out and investigate how people die after watching this video tape and how they're able to see the dead, and the main thing is how to stop it.

Research on Saul Bass

Saul Bass was a graphic designer, film maker and also a director. He made posters and motion picture title sequences which he was best known for. Saul Bass was born in 1920 on the 8th of May and passed away in 1996 on the 25th of April.
Saul's career lasted for 40 years, during his 40 year he worked with some of the most famous Hollywood's greatest film makers which include Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese. He made many films, these films are

These are some of Saul Bass's posters :

It's a mad mad mad mad world

This video by Saul Bass is really creative how the the little man in the film tries to escape from the world, and that is why it is called "It's a mad mad mad mad world". I like how it's been animated because it's really different to others. I like the animation because it's bold and stands out with the colour and the black and white.

Psycho
I like this video opening because it is very original the way the music in the video suits the picture of the video and the lines which come across the screen. The music fits well with the animation because it's in time with everything happening. The music is very fast and dramatic and build up tension with the greens lines going across the screen, it gets faster and slower all the way through video.

Assignment Brief

For our AS media studies our brief is to film and edit a character opening a door crossing a room and sitting in a chair opposite, another characters with whom he/she then exchange a couple of lines of dialogue.

The task we have to demonstrate:-

  • match on action
  • shot/reverse shot
  • 180 - degree rule
Our film should be about 12-15 shots long.

Match on action

Match on action is when something happens the there is cut during a scene then it must  match the same piece of action that is going on at the time.

Shot/ reverse shot
Shot reverse shot is when a character is shown then there is another character looking back at the first character. In this way it looks like they are looking back and for to each other.

180- degree rule

The 180 degree rule is a rule where it is important not to cross the Line of vision between two characters during filming.

Watched a movie on

In the lesson we watched a video of a small film made my students in Australia and it showed how the different affects of camera shots, angles and movement when put together is really effective and it was really effective on the movie how they were used to create the movie.

The film showed us how to make a film and they key terms for making a film.

Things you need when making a film:

Narrative

  • Usually unfolds through characters.
  • Central character is the protagonist.
  • Narrative also unfolds through technique.
- cinematography( use of camera).
- mise en scene ( everything inside a frame).
- sound ( diegetic and non diegetic sound).
- edisting ( sound and picture.

Mise En Scene
  • A french term meaning "that which is put into the scene".
  • Includes such elements of design as lighting, costume, setting, location, character, make up.
  • Consider that everything in a shot has been designed to be there.
Camera/cinematography
  • Movement
  • Lighting
  • Stable camera
  • Moving camera

Camera Shots, Angles and Movement

In the lesson we were shown different different camera shots and angles, movement.

Here are the camera shots and angles:

These are used during filming to make to demonstrate different aspects of film setting, characters and themes. Then we used a camera and one person had to be in the film, and we used all the camera angles, shots and movements and held for 10 seconds for each shot.

Today's is my first lesson of Media Studies
I have never done media studies before so this was my first lesson and I really enjoyed it, and I hope to enjoy it in the future.

For my first day of media for our introduction we were shown how to set up the camera on a tripod. We were also shown different angles of how cameras are shot, these are; panning shot, tracking shot, angles shot, low angles shot. We all took it in turns to set the camera up and how to use it and how to put it down.

This is a picture of a tripod we were shown how to set up;

This is a picture of what camera we used during the lesson;

Today I have learnt in the lesson how to use a camera properly and how to set a camera tripod up and to attach the camera to the tripod. I have never done media before so I didn't know that much about media and how to use cameras and filming. The lesson helped me lot and gave me an understanding on how to use a camera properly and how to film certain shots. This was the first time I have been shown how to use a camera, I found it easy to set it up.I enjoyed using the camera for the first time it was fun and easy and I now know how to use a camera in the future for filming.
